General Membership Meeting

Healthcare Conference

The Healthcare conference was held in Port Elgin this year from October 3rd to 5th, and Local 302 sent 20 delegates. The theme was Reconnect, Refresh, and Refocus.

Opening night, we had National President Lana Payne address the delegation to open the Conference.

Saturday, we heard from Michael Yam and Karen Marchesky of the research department along with Laura Sullivan from Legal on the upcoming proposed PSW registration with HSCPOA. This report was followed by much passionate debate. Almost every Local got to the mic, this was the highlight of the conference for the most participation, so much so, that it ran twice the length of the time allotted. More information will be coming from the Unifor healthcare department.

Other presentations given included Bystander Training, Cytotoxic Drug Exposure Control, and Workplace Violence Prevention

October Dates to Remember

October 29th is the Women’s Committee Sisterhood Bingo with all proceeds going to Haldimand-Norfolk Women’s Services. It is sure to be another successful event.

October 31st is of course Halloween, please keep an eye out for children when you are out driving Friday night.

November

November is lung cancer awareness month and Movember which brings awareness to Prostate Cancer and men’s mental health issues along with many more recognized days.

Unifor continues to support its members who work Media workers and Journalists by marking November 2nd as “The International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists”. On this day we raise our voices to demand justice for Journalists who face grave threats and violence simply for doing their jobs, bringing truth to light and holding power accountable.

November 2nd daylight savings time ends, so remember to turn the clocks back Saturday evening/ Sunday morning.

November 8th is Indigenous Veterans Day, dedicated to honouring the contributions and sacrifices of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis peoples in military service

November 11th is Remembrance Day. Please take the time and observe a moment of silence at 11:00am to honour those that paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.

November 15th is Shine the Light. Each year, the campaign brings awareness to the issue of men's violence against women by turning communities purple for the month of November. (If you’re reading this report, call the office (519) 951-0302 to be entered into a draw for a gift card). Participants show their solidarity with abused women and support them in understanding that any shame and/or blame they may feel does not belong to them but the perpetrators of their abuse.

November 24th is our Christmas shopping day for the school kids. All the shopper spots are full, but we are taking names of those who wish to help wrap gifts, please sign up with Maeda (519) 951-0302.

November 25th is significant for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, designated by the UN to raise awareness of the issue, which stems from the 1960 assassination of the Mirabal sisters in the Dominican Republic and is the start of 16 days of activism against gender violence.
